Dear ICDP colleagues and friends, |
|
With 13 proposals received by the ICDP this year, the number of submissions remains at a high level. All proposals are currently under evaluation by the ICDP Scientific Advisory Group, the Executive Commitee and the Assembly of Governors, respectively, and the lead proponents will be informed by the ICDP Office at GFZ Potsdam soon after final decisions have been made. On the operational side, sampling parties have been conducted in 2023 by the DIVE and BASE projects, and the GRIND project will hold a sampling party in May for the Brazilian part of the project. In addition, ICDP-funded drilling will continue this year in the Ivrea Zone in Northern Italy (DIVE) and in southeastern Germany in the framework of the EGER Project in the Czech Republic and Germany. We are also eagerly awaiting the start of the drilling operations for the Trans Amazon Drilling Project (TADP) in Brazil in May this year and the ICDP bit will also rotate in South Africa's Bushveld Complex as well as for the first time in Antarctica in the ambitious SWAIS-2C project. So, ICDP is happy to report: we are ultimately back in full swing! ICDP-funded workshops are scheduled for planned drilling projects in Malawi, New Zealand and Ethiopia (see details below). We look forward to intense discussions and eventual full drilling proposals that emerge from these workshops. I wish all the scientists, engineers and technicians involved the best of luck and every success. |

Keep the drill bit rotating! Best regards, Marco Bohnhoff (ICDP Executive Director) |

The 21st
INQUA (International Union for Quaternary Research)
Congress in Rome, Italy (July 14 – 20, 2023) will hold the joint IODP-ICDP session "Achievements and new perspectives
in
Quaternary sciences from scientific drilling" (session
208) on Wednesday, July 19, from 11:00 – 13:00 (CEST). The 28th IUGG General Assembly will be held July 11 – 20 2023, Berlin, Germany. Session S07, "Scientific Drilling and Downhole Monitoring - A Key to Understanding Geohazards," will update the community on the latest results and upcoming projects from ICDP, IODP, and other scientific drilling efforts. |

Three ICDP-sponsored workshops are scheduled for this year so far. The ICDP Workshop "REEDRILL" (Zomba, Malawi, May 22 – 26) invites scientists to discuss scientific drilling of alkaline-carbonatites to understand fluid-rock interaction, rare earth element mineralization, groundwater and deep life. The ADD-ON workshop will be held during 28 – 31 August in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Workshop goals are to discuss scientific drilling to get insights into detailed sedimentary facies evolution in an active rift paced by global environmental fluctuations and their interplay with volcanic and tectonic events. The deadline for applications is 31 May. The workshop on New Zealand fjord sediment records of Southern Hemisphere climate change and carbon cycling is scheduled for 27 August – 3 September. Details on this workshop, including information how to apply, will be provided soon on the ICDP homepage and ICDP Social Media. |
